Melaia, a chantress in Navia, was tricked into leaving Navia for Redcliff. The first couple chapters featured action and a background for the story to build from. However, the trip to Redcliff was drawn out longer than needed. Once Melaia arrived in Redcliff the action picked up and did not slow down until the end. Melaia learned during the story that the legends and myths she had learned growing up was much more complicated and held much more truth than she ever imagined.
For a series, the first book had a solid ending; however, the books are not stand alone novels. I would rate Breath of Angel 4 out of 5 stars, mainly because of how long the action was stalled in the first quarter of the book. If the trip to Redcliff had been summarized in only one chapter instead of 4-5 chapters it would've received 5 stars. For other readers, if you stick it out like I did you won't be disappointed. This is a book that could be enjoyed by any audience middle grade or older.
